Louis Markos on Plato, Philosophy, and Christianity
Summary
One of the most famous names in the world is that of the Ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Yet, though many are familiar with his name, far less are familiar with his ideas and how Platonic thought influenced the history of philosophy. My guest on today’s show argues that Plato not only influenced Greek philosophy but that he also played a role in shaping the Christian faith. His name is Louis Markos and he has written an insightful new book titled From Plato to Christ: How Platonic Thought Shaped the Christian Faith. Louis Markos (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is a professor of English and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University. He is the author of many books, including Myth Made Fact: Reading Greek and Roman Mythology through Christian Eyes, Ancient Voices: An Insider's Look at Classical Greece, From Achilles to Christ: Why Christians Should Read the Pagan Classics, Atheism on Trial: Refuting the Modern Arguments Against God, On the Shoulders of Hobbits: The Road to Virtue in Tolkien and Lewis, and Restoring Beauty: The Good, the True, and the Beautiful in the Writings of C. S. Lewis.
